USA women’s hockey player, Hilary Knight, for ESPN Magazine’s 2014 Body Issue.

Having seen these photos, I must say something. It’ll only take a minute or two, I promise.

Yes, Hilary Knight is generally regarded as hot, attractive, all of the above. And I agree with those who think that. These images are INCREDIBLE, but please remember that the purpose of the Body Issue is to focus on and celebrate the beauty and different forms of athletes’ bodies, not exclusively to fantasize about their naked and exposed bodies. I’m not at all trying to tell you what and what not to do, but I am asking you to be respectful about these images. I’d really appreciate it.

By doing so, you are also respecting the tremendous amount of effort and dedication Hilary Knight has put into sculpting the body she has without characterizing the process and/or result in an inconsiderate manner, as well as the fact that STRONG IS BEAUTIFUL.

Male or female, a mindset and body such as Hilary Knight’s should be appreciated and praised for THE RIGHT REASONS.

Thanks for hearing me out.

womenshockeyhistory:

Angela James and Cammi Granato were the first women inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in November 2010.

I am ten years old and have been playing hockey for five years. I am quite a good player and was just chosen as one of the top ten female hockey players in Mississauga. While I was at the Olympics [1988] I saw six hockey games. I did not see any women’s hockey teams. When I get older, I want to be able to compete in hockey with other countries from all over the world. I want the chance to stand on a podium and know I am one of the reasons they are playing ‘O Canada.’ Will I have that chance? If not, could you please let me know why? I will try to understand. Also, if the answer is no, is there anything you can do to change that. I don’t want to give up my dreams.

Excerpt from Samantha Holmes’s letter to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, March 15, 1988 (via womenshockeyhistory)

It’s not a man’s game. It’s an athlete’s game, whether they’re male or female. Women are playing it because they love it, not because they’re trying to be a woman in a man’s game.

Cammi Granato as quoted in the Chicago Tribune September 25, 1994 (via womenshockeyhistory)
